Global Internet. Grassroots Support.

Country by country, community by community, the world continues to come online. Internet access now determines citizens' rights to expression, association, privacy, health, education, work, the benefits of science and culture, and an adequate standard of living. With connectivity expanding at a meteoric rate, individuals, organizations and communities are struggling to protect themselves and their information. Governments across the world are enacting domestic laws and policies aimed at constraining the internet’s expansion, centralizing control over online spaces, limiting rights to access, censoring content, and surveilling citizens’ activity online. Furthermore, non-government actors are implementing a wide range of digital attacks, including malicious software and advanced phishing techniques.

Internews has long been a leader in promoting both digital rights and protections for the world’s most vulnerable populations. From blanket internet shutdowns in Cameroon to low adoption of difficult-to-use privacy and security tools, online space is becoming increasingly unsafe. Our team is empowering local advocates to advance strong internet policies that promote human rights and creating a global network of trainers to expand better digital security practices among high risk users.

Today, more than ever, the promise and potential of a safe, global internet depends on local voices. To learn about how we approach and address these issues, go to Our Approach.
